Holiday Must Watch Movies…
Author: thenicknick
Okay, I know everyone has their favorites, the movies they have to watch during the holiday season in order to feel complete. We all have them. And I’m sure my selections aren’t exceptional, but just in case, in no particular order and for varying reasons…
- Love Actually Due to its R rating, it isn’t one I share with the kids. (If only there weren’t that scene with the couple…coupling nekked as movie doubles…) I love the message. The cast is phenomenal. Hugh Grant. Laura Linney. Liam Neeson. To name a few. Oh, and the stories all interwoven, just like in life… Well, watch it and think of me watching it alone.
- The Muppet Christmas Carol Ah, one I can watch with the kids. By all estimations I should be sick to death of this movie. Rachel and I watched it together all weekend long, every weekend from Halloween to Christmas one year. We do love our musicals. And there’s something about a two year old singing and dancing along with The Muppets. Good times. And this was one of our favorite songs from the movie.
- White Christmas J and I had a tradition. We would wrap Christmas presents together to this movie. He introduced me to it. I grew to love Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. (Yes, she is related to George Clooney.) After watching it the first five times, I moved past my urge to toss Vera Ellen a donut. (She is unnaturally thin!) If you haven’t seen it…it’s a classic, ranking right up there with It’s A Wonderful Life. (And edging out the ever popular A Christmas Story.
- Scrooged Yes, last but not least…because 5 is too many and 3 is too few…the Bill Murray 80s wonderment. I love Carol Kane as the ghost of Christmas past. She’s outrageous and violent. It’s a redemption story. And who doesn’t love a good redemption story. (And I love a good contemporary telling of the Dickens’ classic.)
So, here’s my promise to you. Tomorrow I will write words again. See, I’m still a little distracted right now with my drama. I should be better tomorrow. And the next post will be one for the Gwen Bell Challenge. Yup, have I got a learning experience to share with you. It starts with trust and ends with tragedy. (And sometimes I think I’ll never learn…I just keep finding new mistakes to make.)
Have a great day. Watch a great movie. And try to lay off the popcorn while you’re wrapping. You didn’t go to all that effort picking out the perfect present to leave a few greasy smudges on it while wrapping, right?

George calls her Aunt Rosemary.
If you remember the Lipitor commercial with the 40-something man walking by the poolside with all the woman watching only to see him do a belly-flop into the pool as the voice-over says something about cholesterol levels, it was that commercial that prompted my grandmother to say the singer of the song was Rosemary Clooney — aunt of George Clooney. (Holy run-on sentences, Batman!) =)
It’s not Christmas until we’ve watching Home Alone 1 & 2 (3 & 4 are awful), A Christmas Story, It’s A Wonderful Life (Brian introduced me to that one, actually), and Christmas Vacation. I’m incredibly amused at how life has imitated art in the sense that Randy Quaid is living life like Cousin Eddy. I still enjoy watching the claymation Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special, the Grinch (animated), and all the other animated classics. The song does say “to kids from 1 to 92,” after all. We’re all kids at Christmas!

Great list, Oh man. I have A Christmas Story(Classic), Family Man (Awesome Christmas Movie), and It’s A Wonderful Life (After taking a course on movie analysis this move has a whole new level of awesomeness to it).
I hated Love Actually. Emma Thompson’s character broke my heart (Gah, now I just think of that necklace and the cd he bought her).

We all know the famous Charles Dickens novel for which this is based on and Zemeckis stays faithfully close to it, unworried about making a family movie that has very few laughs. Let’s face it, the story of Scrooge isn’t meant to be a light-hearted laughfest. With demonic horses (complete with glaring red eyes), ghosts with broken jaws and men withering away to a skeleton, this is anything but a hoot. But is that a bad thing? Not at all. In fact it is a relief to see a movie for young (but not too young) and old that doesn’t shy away from evoking feelings of fear and regret rather than always sugar-coating them with funny moments. If dealt with rightly, emotions like these can be healthy and will have a longer lasting effect on you and your kids than something that only makes you laugh.

Where Paper Heart does shine, however, is in the reflections of the general public and few will fail to be moved by their truly inspiring and heartwarming stories of true love.
