It’s home…
Author: thenicknick
I’m not sure where to begin with the tour of my apartment. So, I guess I’ll start with the entry. Mostly I wanted to make sure that Mom saw I have managed to haul that cedar chest she gave me when I was seventeen (has it really been twenty years…) on yet another move.
That chest hid the brown blanket that I bought for us at Sam’s, but I decided to keep because I loved it and I paid for it. Kind of funny story, he discovered it during the move, since it was king sized and made the lid pop up a bit.
Sam: I see you managed to keep the brown blanket.
(Like I would burn that.)
And see…all my huge furniture fits. Now, I can’t open the sleeper sofa…I don’t think. (We haven’t really tried, but I do still have some spacial reasoning skills that suggest it wouldn’t happen.)
It didn’t stop Rachel from having her first sleepover with Ashley out in the living room. I’m guessing it’s because they didn’t want me joining them in the bedroom and I wasn’t sleeping out in the living room on a work night…or ever.
I think it looks pretty good. Warm and homey. And yes, that’s the candle that I made of the sea glass and stones I collected in Atlantic Beach that April. Oh, it was a good sea debris trip.
And I suppose you are wondering about the kitchen…
The door in the picture is to my pantry. Finally, I found something the apartment has that my house lacked. Woo hoo!
And in reality, the apartment kitchen has more storage and cupboard space than the house. I have no trouble fitting everything. I even have room to replace some dishes and bake ware when I can afford it.
Oh, and there’s another thing that the apartment has that I didn’t have in the house. Ready? The apartment has a built in microwave. The house, we had to purchase our own.
Now the microwave we bought was sweet. (I joke it was smarter than the kids since it could speak two languages…) Still a talking microwave that sucks up valuable counter space can never compete with an over the stove hood microwave with a built in turntable.
That’s the other side of the kitchen.
And see how it’s open to the living room? Oh, and I can mostly see over the counter to the living room, so that should be nice for all the entertaining I do. (As long as only one or two people come visit at a time.) After that, given the size of the place…it could get dicey.
So, Thanksgiving should be REALLY interesting. (Or should I say, our new tradition for early Thanksgiving.)
I’m not worried. Somehow, love finds a way. (In honor of Mir.) And we’ll all fit. It’ll be cozy. (Cozy is much nicer than crowded.) And I wouldn’t give up a minute of the time I can spend with those I care about. Love you all!
You realize, of course, that I don’t have a lot of apartment left to show.
So, I’m clearly digging deep when I share with you the girl bathroom, so named because it is the bathroom used…by the girls. Just in case Rachel and I aren’t getting enough together time sleeping a foot apart, we also share a bathroom.
And we already have some lovely habits. For example, every morning, after she leaves, I literally open her drawer (we each have one) and scrape everything she left on the counter into her drawer. And then I shut it. Ahhh. Problem solved. Another tragedy averted.
So, I guess this leaves the piece de resistance. Yes, I know you are all dying to see my bed. In your minds you have been formulating a picture of this cupboard under the bed.
Well, the wait is over. Feast your eyes on my cozy little rest nest. (I just made it up. I don’t know where I come up with these things.)
In the morning, instead of truly having to make the bed, I yank the covers over and shove it under the bed. It looks like a drawer…and it is. It just happens to be a drawer that holds a mattress and, between the hours of 11 and 5:30am…me.
I can’t complain, really. Spending a week on couches and the floor has made me appreciate my little snuggled in spot. And I mostly don’t mind that Rachel is RIGHT THERE. And the apartment is so small that somehow, someway, she is always RIGHT THERE. And as long as we have our weekend breaks and she behaves, we’ll continue to like each other. I have come to treasure the moments when no one is RIGHT THERE. Ahhh.
So, now you know. And now you’ve seen. I’m moved in. I’m happy. And that’s enough for now.
PS. I was going to take pictures of The Boy’s bedroom, but it was…messy. And then I walked into the boy bathroom and…nearly threw up. So, you’re getting the edited for public consumption version of the actual tour. And be grateful.

I like it, it looks very cute and cozy. I love the bed, too, but my sister and I used to share a day bed. They are so much fun. I got the top part and loved making it look like a couch during the day. I’m also a big fan of the bar counter for the kitchen. We’ve had them at both apartments we’ve lived at in this complex, and it makes life so much easier. I foresee you enjoying yours as well. I’m sure Rachel and Keenan will love snagging cookies off that counter, too.
